Another gem close to Madrid in Castilla y León and therefore perfect for a visit in a day - or two - is Segovia. Featuring a ton of amazing ancient buildings and views of the Guadarrama mountains the old town with its aqueduct is a UNESCO world heritage site for a reason.
HOW TO GET THERE
There are various ways to get to Segovia:
- Bus La Sepulvedana from Madrid Moncloa every 15 - 45 minutes for 7,95€.
- Renfe Cercanías from Atocha, Recoletos, Nuevos Ministerios or Chamartín (there are more stops, but those are the most central ones in Madrid) every 30 - 60 minutes. But this will take you about two hours.
- The AVANT train from Madrid Chamartín to Segovia takes you there in less than 30 minutes though. At a cost of 12,90€.
- By car over the A-6, AP-6, AP-61
WHAT TO SEE
One thing you shouldn´t miss - but I don´t know how you would manage to do so anyways - is the Roman aqueduct that happens to run through Segovia´s city center. Walk along it from the beginning and see it getting higher and higher, as you make your way towards the city square.
Also make sure to see the impressive and beautiful cathedral along with Plaza Mayor, as well as the Alcazár on the edge of the plateau that the city is build on.
Make sure to watch the facades of Segovia´s houses. They are really neat and decorated in a way I had never seen before. Casa de Los Picos is a house, that is popular for its spikes. Just take a walk through the alleys and find your favourite facade.
WHAT TO EAT
The city is famous for its Cochinillo Asado, roasted pig. Traditionally it is cut with a plate showing how tender and crispy it is and the plate is then thrown on the floor. Eat it at Mesón de Cándido for example, where this tradition was born.
WHAT´S NEARBY
If you have enough time you might want to check the bus schedule - La Sepulvedana as well, ask in the tourist information by the aqueduct - to Palacio Real La Granja de San Ildefonso. It is surrounded by large parklands and often referred to as the Spanish Versailles. And the old fountains are stunning.
